6 minute circuits for interval training ?

Postby scorpiogrrl on Mon Aug 13, 2007 5:05 am

I am doing TT programmes at the moment and for my last 4 week block one day a week did a circuit style workout for the interval training component (was based on a circuit Craig B has in one of his monthly programmes) - went as follows

3x thru whole sequence

burpees 10 (w. vertical jump)
squats 30
pushups max on toes
mountain climbers 20ea (fast ones “sprinter”)

60secs rest

jacks 100
alt. fwd lunge 15ea
inverted row max
close grip pushup max on toes

60secs rest

Starting my next 4 week block next week (recovery week this week :) ) Wondering about doing something similar using some of the 6 minute circuit exercise sets for my intervals (wouldn't be a full 6 minute circuit workout !). Keeping in mind it's immediately after I've done my TT weight training - thoughts ?

appreciated, thanks.

Donna,

Should be no problem to sub in the 6 min circuits workout there...there's a few things you could do...run through a couple of the mini circuits as is...or cut them down by a set or two and try doing three different ones for a couple sets each.

Shouldn't be a problem.

Let me know how it goes.

A very belated update to this - had a go at this last week - workout post from my blog here ...

http://www.scorpiogrrl.com/blog/?p=225

have decided it didn't work that well doing the exercises straight after my TT weight training - couldn't do full justice to the 6 minute circuit routine especially as the TT programme I'm currently on (unusually for Craig B's programmes is (roughly) an upper body/lower body split) - that day was the upper body one with lots of db presses so my chest muscles were already fried.

So plan is to keep 6 minute circuits in reserve for a standalone programme at some point.

cheers Donna

Hehe....gottcha, didn't it? I would imagine it would have been pretty difficult right after a TT workout. These circuits are certainly a workout all by themselves. But, I was pretty impressed that you bravely added burpees BEFORE the circuits. You go girl!!!

When's your next try at them? I'd be interested to hear how it goes a second time. I'll be tackling Beginner #2 tomorrow.... :o

hey Victoria, probably not going to do the circuits again until I give them a go as a standalone programme at some point. I'm working my way thru the TT Fat Loss manual (2K3 at the mo) and want to do all those workouts first.

cheers d

Donna, for what it's worth, I'm doing TT workouts 3x/week, HIIT 2x/week, and I save the 6th day for "other" stuff, like BW circuits, TRX workouts, and now these 6-minute workouts. I like having one "fun" day where I get to really mix things up and try out new things. So far, the 6-minute circuits are a great addition to the mix and it's been working out really well.

Just a thought!

What you're doing looks a good plan Victoria - I note your good sense in cutting back to 2 HIIT sessions otherwise it'd probably be overtraining (for me it would be anyway) - but generally it suits me better doing 3 HIIT sessions a week and doing them together with the TT workouts so I only do 3 intensive workouts/week. Then lower intensity stuff the other days - swimming Sat morning, bit of casual cycling over the weekend, yoga classes etc. Cheers, D
