Eat Stop Eat ADVANCED

Postby Brad Pilon on Wed Nov 14, 2007 1:37 pm

Hi All,

Starting in January I will be writing Eat Stop Eat Advanced. The diet will stay exactly the same (no need to improve it or add any 'gimicks'), but what I will be doing is adding some extra science to each chapter.

Eat Stop Eat will still be the exact same diet, however I have had requests from many health care professionals to explain some areas with a bit more focus.

Currently I plan on covering: Leptin, Peptide YY, Seratonin, and add in some more information about working out during a breif fasting period.

Are there any topics that you would like to see covered in this new version?

Hi Brad. If you have any added info on growth hormone that would be interesting. I don't think you had that listed.

AWESOME!! i LOVE all the "science geek" stuff ("geek" = me, not you! ). I'm really interested in the Seratonin info as I mentioned in my journal. Also, leptin has always intrigued me especially since my appetite has diminished and i get full so quickly after a fast - -never thought to correlate the 2. hum. thats great!!

Also, a science buddy was explaining to me about through fasting there is increased Ghrelin in the gut leading to increased GH levels. Not sure if its something you'd want to touch on as I know the first edition mentioned increased GH levels. just food for thought (no pun  )

awesome. in all my research on diet/fitness thru the years, i've read multiple times that the only proven way to increase longevity is through caloric restriction..is this therefore related to caloric restriction's (ie fasting) impact on GH levels???

Hi Clem,

Yep, that's part of the theory (sorry my responses are so late, I'm getting killed on this new project.)

A quick question for you...how long would too long be for Eat Stop Eat Advanced in your opinion? (The manuscript is closing in on 200 pages)

Hi Brad!!

No worries on the response, I'm just as crazy, (as everyone is) right now...its the time of year for most! :P

As far as the length of the 2nd edition...i think 200 pages is perfectly fine....everyone who i know that has read your first edition has finished it in less than 1/2 hr. Its a quick (easy) read and such an interesting topic that I don't think length will be much of an issue.

I'm SO EXCITED for the next ESE. I have many ESE fans lined up to purchase it!

Also, when u get a sec (no rush!!) I have a ? for u in my journal. Thanks!!

Brad,

Some days after ending a fast, I remain very hungry even after a meal. Do you have any experience or recommendations on what foods (if any) are best to eat after a fast. If so, I'd definitely like to see that included in the updated ESE.

I've noticed the same thing lately, I've been trying to do more fruits, veggies, fibrous stuff. soups. stuff to fill me up. I also noticed a bad habit of "picking" at the 24 mark...on crap (chocolates, sweets, pretty much anything easy that i could grab while making my meal). Then eating my meal. When I pick on simple carbs before my meals, i notice I get the insulin spikes/crashes and get way hungry after i eat. The first few months I would pick on carrot sticks while i was prepping my meals or i'd stop on the way home and get something already made and ate a wholesome meal at the 24 hr mark and it made a big difference.

Hopefully that can help you some until Brad is around to give you professional insight!

Happy Fasting!

Thanks for your thoughts, Clem.

I usually eat a good meal after a fast. Funny you would mention veggies because more than once I've eaten an entire bag of Steamfresh vegetables (broccoli, carrots and cauliflower OR broccoli, carrots, water chestnuts and sugar snap peas) with some chicken and I'm still hungry. Actually, I kind of feel full (at least for a short time) and hungry at the same time, which I know sounds impossible.

The weird thing is I think the most satisfied I've ever felt after a fast (meaning I didn't feel kind of hungry all evening) was the time I ate 2 slices of pizza. Not a whole pie :) just 2 slices of plain pizza.

Maybe I'm just weird; I thought people remarked on being satisfied with less food after fasting. I've been doing it for about a month now and I haven't experienced that. I will say that it's better than my very first fast. After 24 hours, I had a regular meal- in fact, I had seconds. I had a few other things that night but was extremely hungry all evening- almost as if I was still fasting.

Brad says you shouldn't be hungry on ESE but I don't want to overeat after a fast because it seems counterproductive. My goal is to try to eat normally but it has definitely been a challenge, which is why I wondered if some foods were better to eat after coming off a fast.

Mixxter,

I think it really depends on the person...most people do great with a small fibrous snack like Clem. Me, It's tea with milk and sugar (I know, weird).

In fact, I'm a fan of a hot drink because you drink it slowly, so even if it's a coffee with whole a bunch of sugar, you will most likely drink it much slower then if you were to eat, say a bag of M&M's.

In terms of overeating directly after your fast...remember, you haven't eaten for 24 hours, so even if you added an extra 500 calories after your fast by 'messing up" Im betting you still end that day in a caloric deficit. (I'm not suggesting you do this, but if you do, my advice is..don't sweat it 8) )

Hope this helps,

Brad
