variety in exercises (substitution)

Hey how can I bring variety to my exercises? In the Ebook it says that I have to exchange them, but I don`t know what makes an equal substitute for lunges or split squats for example?
How do you all exchange your whole workouts after some weeks?

You can get variety by doing a different number of reps, sets, grips, angles etc. As for exercises, use Internet resources like the below website to find alternate exercises.
